Over the last few years, the technology has become an increasingly frequent office staple. And its importance is likely to rise as AI improves, thanks to developments like huge language models like GPT-4, which brought us ChatGPT and an increasing variety of additional tools.

While there are other reports on people’s thoughts regarding AI, Pew’s data is large and recent, based on 11,004 US adults polled between December 12 and 18 of last year, just as ChatGPT frenzy was taking hold following its debut at the end of November.

According to the survey, most workers expect AI to revolutionize hiring, firing, and reviews. Many people express being unsure about what those developments would look like and being apprehensive about AI’s potential consequences.

Over the next 20 years, 68 percent of respondents polled expect AI to have a significant impact on jobholders. Surprisingly, only 28% thought AI will touch them personally, while 38% were unsure what the outcome would be for their own work.

These comments reflect the fact that no one knows for certain how AI will affect jobs and work in the future years. Technology is rapidly developing, and its impact varies widely across businesses and even jobs.

We may, however, anticipate that present applications of the technology will increase and become more sophisticated. Some firms already use AI to help screen job applicants, while cunning job seekers try to outwit the algorithms. In principle, AI technology has the ability to improve recruiting equity and workplace diversity. In practice, though, it has occasionally done the reverse, prompting the US government to caution companies about the possibility of algorithms discriminating against people with impairments.
